UEFA Euro 2016 – The Final 16

University stress busters

Well, they made it. England are through to the Round of 16 at the European Championships! Here’s what you need to know ahead of tonight’s game…

So they’ve done it! They might not have won the group but England are through, and their last 16 match isn’t looking too shabby… though Iceland aren’t to be underestimated.

Despite sitting 34th in the FIFA World Rankings, Iceland haven’t lost a game in this year’s Championships, holding both Portugal and Hungary to 1-1 draws and beating Austria 2-1 to finish second in Group F!

So, with that in mind, what do England need to do to ensure a win tonight and secure their place in the Quarter-Finals?!

The England Manager

Roy Hodgson hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory during the Championship so far, with many saying his choice to rest Wayne Rooney for the final group clash against Slovakia cost them the top spot.

But if he puts out a strong team tonight, and makes positive changes like he did in the Wales game (where necessary), then England should see themselves through.

The England Players

Iceland have a solid defence, so England are going to have to come up with some smart attacking play to break them down and concentrate on that, ever elusive, end product in front of goal.

At the same time, they need to make sure they don’t get loose at the back — Iceland have scored 4 goals at the tournament to date (one more than England) and are dangerous and efficient on the counter.

Positive Mental Attitude! (And Positive Play)

We all know that England have a bad habit of sitting back a bit when they think the win is on. We can’t afford to make that mistake tonight, as Iceland have proved tough opposition thus far.

A positive mental attitude, and positive attacking football, is needed from the whole England squad, and that includes the players on the bench, the support staff and, of course, the manager!
