Advice for Parents

When the news comes through that your son or daughter will be attending university in September, they will be understandably elated. However, over the coming weeks and months, they may become apprehensive as it is an entirely new experience. This is completely normal as the experience of spending an extended period of time away from home may be a new concept for them.

This time comes with its challenges and it is important for parents to be fully prepared for all eventualities. While we appreciate that this will also be an emotional time for the parents, we’re sure they’d agree that the most important thing is to ensure that their kids are ready for the exciting period of their life that is just about to start.

Here at Andrew Chell, we have years of experience in helping students get settled and reassuring parents that they are safe in one of our premier student homes. This is why we feel it is important that we help parents understand how to help their son or daughter transition into university life. This page will explain some of our key tips for ensuring the process goes smoothly.

General Tips for Uni Moving in Day

Moving in day can be a busy and stressful period of time, so planning for this day well ahead of time will ensure that the stress caused is minimal. Here are some of our key tips to consider when building up to the big day.

  1. Create a list of essential items to pack - It would be easy to overlook some of the more basic household amenities when packing for university. By creating a list for your son or daughter of standard things they will need to operate on their own, you are saving them the embarrassment of forgetting it and havingto ask for help. Think about things such as washing machine pods, kitchen utensils and hand soaps etc.

  2. Understand the moving-in process - All universities are different when it comes to moving into student accommodation, but they will all have their own processes. Make sure you and your son or daughter are aware of things such as your allocated time slot.

  3. Don’t stay longer than is needed - It can be an incredibly emotional time helping your child move into their university accommodation, which is why it is important you let them get acclimated with their new surroundings. Once you feel that you have done everything to help them feel comfortable in their new accommodation, it would be time to leave.

  4. If you follow these core tips you should be well on your way to doing all you can to help your child with one of the biggest days in their life.

How to Help your Child from a Distance

When your son or daughter moves out of the family home and sets up shop at university, you may find yourself wondering how you can still help them without physically being there. While we would encourage you to leave them to their own devices the majority of the time, there are obviously a few things you can do to help them make the most of their time at university.

Encourage them to Join Societies or Social Groups

University life isn’t just about studying, it’s also about getting involved in campus life and making new friends. Encourage your child to attend orientation events, join clubs, and attend social gatherings. This will help them meet new people and find their place on campus. It is also incredibly important that you remind your child that university is a unique opportunity to explore new interests and try new things, so they should take advantage of everything their new home has to offer.

Freshers week is a great opportunity to attend socials with many societies holding taster sessions/meetings during this time.

Move in day is a great opportunity to get out and about with your son or daughter exploring the local area. If fortunate enough to get a house in the golden triangle, why not go out with them and point out all the places they may find helpful.

Establish Healthy Habits before they Leave

While this is relevant to things such as eating habits, we are specifically talking about healthy spending habits. University is a significant time when young adults learn a lot about how to budget in order to get everything they need. If you instill effective budgeting habits into their lives before they get to university, they will benefit from always having enough money to afford their food shop every week.

Of course, we would also recommend that you help your son or daughter understand how important it is to be able to cook basic meals and do basic household chores. These are skills that will make their life off campus a lot easier.

Stay Positive and Keep in Touch

Just because your child is no longer under your roof doesn’t mean you lose contact with them entirely. All university accommodation will now have access to WiFi meaning you can still stay in touch with them whilst they are away during term-time. Of course, the occasional visit to see them is encouraged, but this should be done on their terms to ensure they are fully settled in their new surroundings.

All Andrew Chell Premier Student Homes come with super-fast WiFi as standard meaning your son or daughter will always be able to access the internet. With our All-inclusive rent payment package, each one of our rooms comes with internet speeds of up to 500mbs.

Ensuring you respect their independence and privacy while away from home, but also reassuring them that you’re only a phone call away will help them realise their potential at university.
