Postgraduate Accommodation

Entering the postgraduate stage of higher education can sometimes present a few complications when it comes to accommodation. You may have spent the past 2-3 years in a shared house alongside friends or coursemates but as the time comes for you to decide whether you will continue with your studies, your housemates may have already decided they aren’t going to carry on onto masters level.

In an ideal world, they would have stayed on and you could just extend your agreement with your landlord. But as is commonly the case, you will need to look for new accommodation for the coming year. With this in mind, we have put together this guide to help answer any questions you may have about finding accommodation for your postgraduate year as well as giving you some tips to make your potential final year a good one.

How Andrew Chell Accommodates Loughborough Postgraduate Students

Here at Andrew Chell, we have years of experience helping postgraduate students in Loughborough find accommodation for their next year of studies. We understand that after a few years of university, it can be difficult to move into a new home with new people which is why we aim to make it as easy as possible for you to find the perfect place for the next year.

With a range of different-sized houses available for rent, ranging from 3 beds all the way up to 7+ beds, we can accommodate nearly every potential group size. Simply get your group together and get in touch if you’ve found one of our properties that you would like to view. Some of our properties are available to view via video tour also.

We offer Spare Rooms, which become available throughout the year for quick move-ins should your circumstances change rapidly. Before committing to the room you have declared an interest in, we of course help you meet your potential new housemates before getting a look around the house. This allows you to get a feel for the type of people you will be sharing a space with for the next academic year.

When’s the Best Time to Look for Postgraduate Student Accommodation?

As is the case with looking for accommodation whilst completing your undergraduate degree, you are likely to find more variety and success looking for accommodation in the winter months. Establishing which of your friends or current housemates are staying ahead of this period will help speed up your search.

We recommend putting out some feelers in September/October as this will give you enough time to pull together a group of you who can begin your house search for the following year. The next steps from here are searching for your dream house, booking a viewing and then making a decision.

How to Choose the Perfect Postgraduate Student House

There are a few things to consider before choosing where you want to live during your postgraduate studies. After you’ve deciphered who is sticking around for another year and finalised how many bedrooms you require, you can begin looking into the specifics that make your master’s year as pleasant as possible.

Location will be the most important aspect you have to consider. With regards to Loughborough, where do you want to be? If you enjoy the social side of university, then securing a property within the golden triangle is vital. However, if you have never been much of a partier or have put those days behind you, then you may wish to find something outside of this area.

You need to also choose a house that is a practical solution for your needs. If you have a job in the centre of town, then the logical solution would be something situated not too far from here. You may also wish to have something close to amenities such as supermarkets and gyms as this will save you money on travel. If you attended Loughborough at undergraduate level you will already be aware of how the town is structured, thus making your search easier.

Does the Postgraduate Loan Cover Rent?

One of the biggest obstacles you will face as a student, and be all too familiar with as a postgraduate student, is loans and details such as how much and when they’re paid. According to UCAS, the maximum loan offered for Master’s level students is £11,295. This is to help with course fees and rent, so your first task is to work out how much of your loan will be going towards course fees, then it will leave you with the amount of money you have left to put towards your rent.

Where postgraduate loans differ from undergraduate is the fact that at undergraduate level, you have your course fees covered in one loan, and then you are entitled to a certain amount of maintenance loan depending on your household income. Postgraduate level, however, is one fixed loan and therefore has to cover your course and whatever is leftover can be spent how you please.
