Looking for moving-in help for students? Here are our must-have Uni essentials to bring with you to halls

Your first year is going to be full of experiences and you will learn a lot, not only academically, but also life lessons and skills. When it comes to items to bring with you to university, we’ve always bordered on the side of bringing too much, rather than being left short. But we also understand that you may be restricted in how much you can bring due to situations such as travelling by train or smaller car. This is why this guide exists, we’re here to provide moving-in help for students so you’re as efficient as possible.

For your room

Your room is going to be your place to relax, somewhere to seek refuge after a long day on campus so you need to make sure you fill it with everything you need to be comfortable. We would recommend that you take the following, as a bare minimum:

  • Pillows and duvet, along with mattress sheets - It is very unlikely these will be supplied for you.
  • Enough clothes to last you the week - the more you bring, the less often you will have to do a wash, but you will have more to wash. Most universities charge for the use of laundry rooms, so this could save you a bit of money.
  • The appropriate stationery and similar - you are at university to do a bit of studying after all.

Of course, the best way to make your home away from home really feel like yours is to bring the items you really cherish with you. If you’re someone who likes to have a TV in your room or a games console, for example, these will be great additions to your room. But be careful to ensure these don’t hold you back from connecting with your housemates and experiencing all university has to offer.

It is worth noting that when moving to university, it is easy to forget to bring some of the things you use in your day-to-day life, but when it comes to compiling a list they slip your mind. For example, ensure you have packed the likes of Laptops (along with the appropriate chargers), stationery for note taking as well as any equipment you may need for societies and sports teams.

For the Kitchen

Now seeing as this will be a space you are sharing with your flatmates, it is important you don’t take up more space than you are allocated. It is easy to fall out over small, trivial things when there is a simple solution, so make sure you take what you need.

We would recommend:

  • Glasses and cups
  • Plates, bowls and mugs
  • Pans
  • Chopping boards
  • Cutlery
  • Utensils; wooden spoons, pizza slicers, knives

If you are moving into your second year accommodation, you may be able to share utensils and pans and this will help you save space. But make sure that you clean up after using them!

Advice for a Loughborough student moving in

We know it can be a difficult transition from home to university, which is why we are keen to share some of the best advice we have, both from experience, but also from past tenants. There are a few things you can do to make sure you settle in as quickly as possible. Here is some of our best advice:

Get to know your surroundings

Living in Loughborough as a student might be different to what you’re used to at home. Which is why similarly to your hometown, you get to know what there is around you. If you’re lucky enough to find your accommodation within the Loughborough Golden Triangle, it is a great opportunity to find your bearings with regard to where everything is.

The Loughborough Golden Triangle is an area situated not far from Loughborough University and is very popular with students. At Loughborough University, location is key, with The Golden Triangle being the best place for student accommodation in the town.

It is also a good idea to map out where your local shops are because there is nothing worse than not having enough milk for your cup of tea!

Make sure you don’t have to worry about paying bills

Where possible, we recommend getting all your bills done in one place. For example, if you’re paying rent, are your electricity, water and gas bills all included in your rent? Here at Andrew Chell Premier Homes, we offer an all-inclusive package for our bills.

What is our All-inclusive package?

It’s a budgeted allowance scheme of £10 per Tenant per week that is added to the rent to cover the cost of Water Rates and TV License along with all the bills for electricity & gas supplies and superfast Virgin Media internet. Any of this allowance that goes unused will just be refunded.
